Browsing your files in the web app

The file manager shows the folders your agent is allowed to share, live from the computer they are on. Nothing is copied to the server first: every listing is a question asked of your own machine and answered over an encrypted channel.

Pick a device

The device list names every computer paired with your account. A device you can browse shows a Connect button; one whose agent is not running is marked offline with the time it was last seen.

An offline device is almost always an agent that is not running rather than a broken account — the device shows as offline walks through it in order.

All devices is a virtual root: it lists your machines side by side so you can see what exists before picking one. You cannot upload, rename or preview from it — those need a real folder on a real device.

Move around

  • Double-click a folder to enter it. Up or Backspace goes back out.
  • The breadcrumb above the list is clickable, and clicking a path copies it.
  • Refresh or F5 re-asks the agent. The listing is not polled, so if you change something in Windows Explorer it appears here on the next refresh, not by itself.
  • Column headers sort by name, type, size or creation date. Folder sizes are calculated after the listing arrives, one folder at a time, so they fill in gradually.
  • The grid/table toggle switches between a thumbnail grid and the detailed table.

Select one thing or several

Click selects. Ctrl+click adds or removes one item, Shift+click takes a range, and the header checkbox selects everything visible. Delete works on a whole selection; rename, preview and download work on exactly one item.

Two different search boxes

They are not the same tool, and the difference matters:

  • Filter (Ctrl+F) narrows the folder you are looking at. It is instant, because the listing is already in the browser.
  • Search all folders walks the tree below your current folder, asking the agent for each folder in turn. It starts about half a second after you stop typing.

The recursive search has limits worth knowing: it matches names only, never file contents; it stops after 500 folders, so a very deep tree may not be covered completely; and folders your account cannot read are skipped silently rather than reported.

Preview without downloading

Select a file and press Space, or double-click it. Images, video, audio, PDFs and text — including source code, JSON, YAML and logs — open in place. Anything else is offered as a download instead.

Preview is capped at 50 MB, and your plan may cap it lower. Arrow keys move to the next and previous file in the folder.

Create, rename, delete

New folder creates one in the folder you are in; names cannot contain \ or /. Rename and delete act on your selection, and deletion asks for confirmation, once for one item and once for a batch.

Every one of these operations happens on the remote machine. There is no undo, and no recycle bin behind it.

Two ways to move files

  • Drag a file from your computer onto the list to upload it.
  • Drag a row onto a folder in the list to move it there, on the remote machine.

Uploads and downloads have their own rules and limits — see transferring files.

What your plan changes

Some buttons carry a padlock: Share, Preview, and on the free plan also rename and the rest of the editing tools. The button explains itself when you hover it. What each plan includes is in plans and quotas.

When the list will not load

  • "No device connected" — nothing is selected yet, or the one you selected went offline.
  • A JSON or "unexpected character" error means the agent connected but your browser and the agent no longer agree on the encryption key, usually after a password change. The fix is in the device shows as offline.
  • "The session was restored without an encryption key" — sign out and sign in again. The key lives only in the tab you signed in from and is never stored on the server.
